Minister Kabbyanga promises new Govt commitment to end rabies in Uganda by 2030

The Minister expressed appreciation about the coordination and collaboration of over 15 partners, who came together to fight rabies as Uganda marked World Rabies Day 2024 with a week of activities. He later awarded certificates to District Health Officers, District Veterinary Officers, public health staff, surveillance focal persons, Uganda Wildlife Authority staff, District Health Educators plus statisticians from western region who attended a One Health training this week in Kasese

Over 2000 animals vaccinated during World Rabies Day celebrations

Uganda celebrated World Rabies Day in Kasese on September 28, where 2,222 animals including cats and 9 dogs were vaccinated during a five-day campaign.

In Kampala district, Lukuli, Naguru and Mpererwe registered 424 animals for vaccination.

Those that were neutered (eliminating male sexual organs to prevent the production of young animals) included 202 male cats and dogs, and 228 female cats and dogs were spayed (removed ovaries).

All these animals were worked on free of charge.

Rabies Out Break in Busia District.

Busia District is currently grappling with a rabies outbreak, with 19 confirmed cases and rising incidences of bites from stray dogs and foxes. A mass vaccination campaign targeting 15,000 dogs and cats is underway, with vital support from the Ministry of Agriculture and international partners. As veterinarians, your role is pivotal in this fight against rabies. Your expertise is not only crucial in administering vaccines but also educating pet owners, and managing public health risks.

Free Vaccinations, Surgeries For Cats And Dogs

In celebration of the upcoming World Veterinary Day in Uganda on April 27, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries and Fisheries (MAAIF) and Uniquely Paws, an international organisation in animal welfare, is organising eight free vaccinations against rabies and surgery clinics.


Meg Hilbert Jaquay, the co-Founder of Uniquely Paws Ltd says this year’s event will take centre stage in Rakai and Kampala districts from April 24 to April 28,

Animal Welfare As The Bedrock Of Public Health

Have you seen the new, yellow dog collars in your neighbourhood yet?  This new initiative, created and funded by Uniquely Paws Ltd, a non-profit based in the USA, and run by our very own Meg Hilbert Jaquay and Sue Williams, is called The Yellow Collar Initiative.  For every dog that receives a rabies vaccination in Uganda, they receive a yellow collar, each with a unique registration number on it, indicating that the animal has received a rabies vaccine, in which district the dog lives (1 is for Kampala, 2 is Wakiso, and so on), and the year they first received their collar.

World Rabies Day 2023

The world Rabies Day celebrations were concluded at the end of september and saw over 1138 animals vaccinated in the areas of Kampala, Wakiso, Gomba, and Mityana which are the districts with many stray animals according to animal protection NGO Uniquely Paws Founder Meg Jaquay.
